Promotional, advertising, complimentary or corporate gifts: what is the difference?

Updated 19 October 2026

People ask for the same kind of product by many names: promotional items, advertising gifts, complimentary gifts, corporate gifts, giveaways, merchandise or, in Hindi, prachar samagri. They overlap a great deal — a pen with your logo can be any of them — but each name hints at a different purpose, and the purpose decides what you should buy.

Promotional items and giveaways

**Promotional items** are made to spread your name widely: pens, key rings, carry bags, coasters and other plastic novelties handed out in large numbers at events, counters and shops. The aim is reach — as many people as possible seeing your logo — so the price per piece matters most. See promotional gifts under ₹100 and conference and event giveaways.

Advertising gifts

**Advertising gifts** carry a message, not only a logo: your product, your phone number, your website or an offer. They are often given by dealers and shops to their own customers — a wall clock with a dealer's name and number, a pen stand on a counter, a carry bag with the shop's address. They work because they are seen every day where buying happens.

Complimentary gifts

**Complimentary gifts** are given free with a purchase, a booking or a visit — a diary with an insurance policy, a bag with a large order, a gift set at a showroom opening. They should feel like a thank-you, so quality counts more than with giveaways.

Corporate gifts

**Corporate gifts** are given by a company to clients, partners and employees, often at Diwali, New Year or on joining. They build relationships rather than reach, so they are fewer and better: a premium diary, a metal pen, a gift set, a wall clock.

Prachar samagri and publicity material

**Prachar samagri** — publicity material — is the Hindi name many buyers use for all of the above, especially for campaigns, product launches and dealer promotions: printed bags, pens, key rings, pen stands and other items given out in large numbers.

Which do you need?

  • **Many people, low cost per piece:** promotional items and giveaways.
  • **Your message where customers buy:** advertising gifts for dealers and shops.
  • **A thank-you with a purchase:** complimentary gifts.
  • **Fewer people who matter most:** corporate gifts.

Most companies use more than one: a corporate gift for key clients at Diwali, promotional pens for events, and advertising clocks for their dealers. Every product in our range of 1,426 — whatever it is called — is made or branded with your logo, sold in bulk at a published price for each quantity band, and delivered across India to the address you give.

Questions

What is the difference between promotional items and corporate gifts?

Promotional items aim at reach — many people, low cost per piece. Corporate gifts aim at relationships — fewer, better gifts for clients and staff.

What is prachar samagri?

Prachar samagri is the Hindi term for publicity material: printed bags, pens, key rings and other items given out to spread a name or message.

Are complimentary gifts the same as giveaways?

Not quite. Giveaways are handed out widely; complimentary gifts come free with a purchase or visit, so they should feel like a thank-you.
